'Parent & Tot Camp' & 'Wipeout Bar & Grill' Review

Last week, my son and I experienced summer camp for the first time together; we had lots of fun and wanted to share it with you as another one will take place in Marinwood this August. I also review a fun surf-themed restaurant in Greenbrae to try out this summer. Enjoy!

“Parent & Tot Camp”

Marinwood Community Center, 775 Miller Creek Road, San Rafael:
Tel: 415-479-0775 & view website

Every summer the Marinwood Community Center provides summer camp for children aged 3 and up. This year they are introducing a "Parent & Tot Camp" for 2 ½ - 3 year olds to introduce younger kids to summer camp with a view to continue it next summer based on how popular it is.

I signed my two year old son and me up (at an extremely reasonable rate) and attended it last week with a friend and her daughter. The camp took place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30 - 12.30 pm, which was perfect timing to entertain a toddler all morning before their afternoon nap.

Each day there were different activities planned around the camp's weekly theme which was "beach party". The format of the day would start with a welcome circle time with the two group councilors playing games with the other children and then a sing song with the other children in the different camps.

One day we would do some dancing or play with bubbles and each day there was a different arts and crafts activity. This included painting with sand, decorating a sun visor and beach bag with paint, sequins and feathers, and marble painting which we hadn’t done before. It involved placing a piece of colored paper into an aluminum tray and then dropped marbles covered in different colored paint into the tray and rolling the marbles up and down to create an abstract piece of artwork across the paper.

After snack time the children had 30 minutes in the tot's pool and then fun running through the water sprinklers on the grass in the park. We ended each session with a picnic lunch together with a story for those who could tear themselves away from their food.

We really enjoyed it and thought it was a great introduction to camp and even preschool for the younger children, with the added confidence that their parent was by their side throughout the experience.

They are planning on doing another one during the first week of August (same times as before) and I highly recommend signing up through the Marinwood Community Services website: view website

Restaurant of the Week

‘Wipeout Bar & Grill’, 302 Bon Air Center, Greenbrae, 94904, (Sir Frances Drake exit off Hwy 101); view website

Looking for a fun place to take the kids for dinner, look no further than ‘Wipeout Bar & Grill’ in Greenbrae's Bon Air Center. It opened in the fall of 2007 when the Simmons family took inspiration from exploring the California coast with their children looking for the best beach shacks and surf food. They opened up branches in San Francisco and Marin, and use the freshest seafood and meat, and organic produce when available.

A friend of mine introduced us to this surf themed restaurant by inviting us to join her family for dinner on “Tiny Tuesdays” when the kids eat for free with the purchase of an adult’s entree. There is also supposed to be complimentary balloon animals and face painting, but not the night we were there.

It was an extremely hot evening but the outdoor seating was taken by a large group so we took refuge in the air conditioning. Inside there are large tables and booths, and my least favorite thing in a restaurant; multi TV screens, but most of them were showing surfing rather than the game. We arrived at 5.30 pm and within 30 minutes it filled up quickly with lots of families.

Our waiter was a fun entertaining guys who interacted well with the kids, but didn’t remember our orders very well. The slogan on the menu read: "We take our margaritas seriously", so as advised we went for the premium tequila 'top shelf Margaritas' something I don't have often but decided to treat ourselves as it was such a hot day, and it hit the spot!

My husband and I asked to share the gorgonzola salad with candied walnut and apple, but got two salads each which were fine as they were refreshingly delicious. I had the regular cheeseburger which was nice and my husband asked for the California Burger cooked medium with blue cheese, but got it well done with jack cheese. My son enjoyed his cheeseburger and fries and then proceeded to also tuck into his friend’s Teriyaki salmon and coconut rice. Our friends also had the cheeseburger and grilled steak salad with mixed greens and chimichurri sauce which she recommends.

There are fun things for the kids to see after they have finished their meals such as novelty painted surf boards, bicycles, beach signs and a cool camper van cut in half and mounted onto an outside wall opposite a colorful outdoor seating area with fire pit where lots of kids were running off their burgers.  There is also a bar area with small side tables made out of surf boards that are great for adults to eat at during happy hour from 3 – 6.00 pm.

My husband was a bit underwhelmed by the food but this isn’t gourmet cooking, more of a fun place to eat with the kids while you kick back and enjoy the colorful surroundings with a cool drink in your hand.

If you are a fan of the interior design process or just love seeing fabulous homes then tune in!

Movie of the Week

We are very excited in our household about the release of ‘Cars 2’; it will be my son’s first trip to the movie theater, wish us luck! "What Being a Dad Has Taught Me" & Father's Day Gift Ideas

This Sunday is Father's Day when we take the time to say thank you to not only our own father (and Grandpa) but to our husbands for the great job they do as co-pilot, and for the joy they bring into our children's lives. My husband and “wing man” has learnt a lot so far about being a Dad to two children and here are his top ten lessons:

What Being a Dad Has Taught Me

By Adam Davies

Being a Dad has taught me lots of things…especially that these kids are smart, way smarter than we give them credit for, but mostly that my kids think I'm the best Dad in the world, even when I've had a crappy day.

Here are the main 10 things I'm still learning daily about being a Dad:

1) I need to have a sense of humor about it all and remember to laugh at the chaos.

2) It doesn't matter how much you talk about poo, you'll never get used to the smell of someone else's!

3) Having two kids now, it's amazing how talented I've become at doing things one handed.

4) I now know, from having a son that there are more names for diggers and tractors than you could possibly imagine!

5) There are some fascinating things in life that we often overlook and take for granted, but that my kids are amazed by each day.

6) I still have so much more to learn about being a Dad, it isn't a science, I'm not always going to be perfect (yes, even Super Dads can mess up from time to time!), but patience and tolerance will get us through if you remember to laugh at your mistakes.

7) You need to remember to take loads pictures of your kids, not just so you won't forget... but also how else are you going to embarrass them at their future birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries?!

8) You need to remember that while the family always comes first, you need to find some time to still be the man you were, as well as the husband and father you have become. (Looking forward to tee off time  this week!)

9) We won't always be cleaning poo off everything forever and there will be an end to it. (BTW, you do need to stop having kids, if you want an end to that!)

10) Finally, you’re not in it alone! Remember to speak to other Dads. Something we guys aren't traditionally very good at. But you'll be amazed at the effects a good BBQ, cold beers and tequila shots can have, so get some Dads together and take some well-deserved down time now and then!

What Other Dads Have learnt from Fatherhood

“Since the birth of our children was not as expected (twins at 29 weeks) the parenting learning curve has been different than most. Knowing they would be in the hospital for months and I wouldn't be able to bond with them the traditional way, I think it kick started an incredibly powerful love and bond the second they arrived. I've heard some Dads say it takes time for those feelings to develop but for me it was instant, and in that way I feel lucky.”
Ryan, father to 10 week old premature twins

“I have learnt that time is precious. You can’t waste any time when you have kids and that you have to be organized with what and how you do things, that way everyone gets what they want when they want it.”
Jon, father to a 3 year old boy & 12 day old boy

“Being a Dad has taught me that living for someone else is more fun and rewarding than living for yourself. Oh and I forgot I really like peanut butter sandwiches a lot!”
Jimmy, Dad to a 2 year old daughter.

Affordable Father's Day Gift Ideas

Making a homemade card and present means a lot, and until some of our children can choose a gift themselves, we have to give them a helping hand.

Inserting a photo or piece of artwork inside a photo frame card and helping your child decorate the frame makes it more personal than a shop bought card. You can find them at most drugstores like CVS Pharmacy or Strathmore does great acid free ones.

Photographs capture memories and make them last forever. Print out your favorites and fit them into special "Dad" or “Daddy & Me” frames like this inexpensive one from Michaels you can also get similar ones from Kohl's or Target.

If he is a foodie why not make a hamper full of his favorite things like his favorite bottle of wine or beer, nice cheese, chips, chocolate etc. You could even take the hamper on a special Father's Day picnic.

The gift of downtime means a lot to a Dad. So reward him with a free pass in the form of homemade gift cards to spend a few hours on the golf course, a bike ride, a night out with the guys or an afternoon to enjoy the game in peace. You and your child can have fun making individual gift cards or color a small notebook of tear out sheets in the form of vouchers to use throughout the year.

Happy Father's Day!

Family Friendly Wineries & Grapebomb's new 'Napa Card' Giveaway!

Most of us moms appreciate a well-deserved glass of wine and we are so fortunate to live so close to the beautiful wine country. This week my friend Elena McAlpine suggests some great wineries that are family friendly day trips out. She is also sharing some great savings to celebrate the launch of Grapebomb by giving away their new ‘Napa Card’, see details below on how to win one!
It’s easy just pop, pour and breath!

Here’s to You, Mom!

By Elena McAlpine, posted June 8th 2011

At the end of a long day with my 2 year old, usually consisting of six outfit changes (her, not me) and a few temper tantrums (me, not her) I love to relax with a nice, big glass of wine. It’s a ritual that I cherish, opening a bottle of Pinot Noir and sitting down with my husband to relax and talk about our day. It’s a little reward I give myself after my daughter insists on wearing a shower capand nothing else to the grocery store or points at a blemish on my face and asks if she can kiss my boo boo.

I always loved wine and going wine tasting in the Napa Valley. Only 45 minutes away, it makes for a fun and easy day trip. Now that I have a toddler to think about, I decided I had to discover a new ‘family friendly’ wine country and make it affordable for my family to enjoy.

That’s why my husband and I started ‘The Napa Card’. It’s an easy way to save money wine tasting in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Sipping wine with your family gets you out of the house doing what you love (indulging yourself, of course!) while taking your kids out on anadventure. There are plenty of family friendly wineries out there. Here are a few to get you toasting with your tots while saving a buck or two with ‘The Napa Card’.

Cline Cellars – With a tasting room located in an 1850s farmhouse, this winery is a top pick.

Enjoy a picnic on lush green lawns while the kids discover the six spring-fed ponds. Surrounded by over 5,000 rose bushes, dozens of rustling willow trees and ever-changing gardens, this winery calls to be discovered by adults and children alike.

Clif Family Winery – Taste Clif Family’s Climber Red or Kits Killer Cab at their wine tasting shop Vino Velo. Combining the family’s passion for the outdoors with their love of wine, Vino Velo is a wine tasting and bicycle shop all in one. Bring the bikes and have a taste of wine before being your children’s tour guide to the Napa Valley.

Tudal Family Winery – Between the bocce court, the enticing flower and vegetable gardens and the collection of historic farm tractors, tools and bygone novelties, your family will love Tudal Family Winery. They also make a fantastic Cabernet Savignon! Kids can explore the grounds while you sip and relax.

Cheers!
Elena

Learn How to Make "KID MAIL"

While I am adjusting to life with a newborn and toddler, my friend Danielle Walker is my first guest to post a great craft activity called “KID MAIL” to share with your little one, enjoy!

‘KID MAIL’ by Danielle Walker

posted June 2nd 2011

I admit it. My two-and-a-half year old is totally "plugged in." Since the day that she was born she has had a weekly Skype date with her grandparents who live 3,000 miles away, she knows that her favorite episodes of "Fresh Beat Band" are always available on the DVR and 90% of her play dates are arranged via text or a Facebook invite.

Fortunately for me, she is also still young enough to be completely enamored with old-fashioned snail mail. Now that she's also increasingly interested in activities that allow her do "big kid" things all by herself we created a KID MAIL center at our house to encourage her love of sending hand-written messages. We use felt fabric envelopes as they're more durable than paper envelopes when the messages are getting pulled out and shoved in over and over (see directions below for how to make the envelopes), blank index cards and a couple of crayons to write notes and send pictures to one another. We made five envelopes in different colors for each member of the family (and yes, we included the dog AND the fish) and put a mailbox in the entryway for deliveries (we use a "dressed up" shoebox, but you could use a basket or whatever is on hand).

She loves delivering the envelopes filled with little pictures she's drawn for us and "notes" she's scribbled. In our house we use KID MAIL to send tea party invitations to her stuffed animals or thank you notes to Daddy for taking out the trash or even bills to the dog for the toys that he's chewed up.  She loves sitting at the kitchen counter writing notes while I cook dinner and on the special days when her envelope contains a new sticker, a hand written note from Mommy, a postcard or a picture of a friend her face lights up!

A friend of mine who also plays the KID MAIL game found that her three-year-old son loves exchanging letters with a four-year-old neighbor friend who is learning how to read and write and thinks that a hand-delivered letter from her friend is the most special thing in the world.

It's just a small game that we like to play in our house, but it's a fun way to shut down the tech for a little while and reconnect with a traditional way of communicating with the (big and little) ones we love.

How I Made The Envelopes:

Materials Needed:

1. Sheets of felt in colors of your choice- these come in 9" or 12" x 12" sheets at any craft store.
2. Blank note cards or index cards
3. Needle and thread in a contrasting color (NOTE: If you are not sew-savvy, you can use all-purpose craft glue instead)
4. Fabric paint or other baubles to decorate the envelopes with (i.e., sequins, pom poms)

Step One:

Cut the felt so that it's two inches wider than the note card and 1 1/2 times longer than the note card.

Step Two:

Fold the bottom of the felt up so that it forms a pocket (or an envelope!!) big enough for the note cards and sew or glue the sides, because it's felt the flap of the envelope will hold itself down and you don't need any kind of adhesive or Velcro to hold it down.

Step Three:

If you want, use fabric paint or other baubles to decorate the envelope or let each person in the family decorate their own. Have fun!!
